We strive for equitable access to knowledge and nurturing individual learning.
Knowledge: equitable access to information, instruction and educational experiences
Learning: adapting to individual needs to develop their full academic and social potential
Education equality (sameness) means giving every student the same educational resources and opportunities. This could refer to the same funding for all schools, the same quality of and abundance of materials and facilities, and/or the same quality of instruction.
Education equity (fairness) means giving each student access to the resources they need to learn, depending on their specific situation. For example, some students may need particular accommodations, more attention, and personalized/customized instruction.
Both education equality and equity are important, but education equity is crucial to ensure that all students get to the same positive outcomes, regardless of where they started or what unique individual circumstances and challenges they may experience.
Education gap issues are linked to other inequities, like social inequities - such as structural/systemic racism and sexism, language barriers, or a lack of accommodations for disabilities - or economic and life essential inequities - such as poverty, food insecurity, or homelessness. In some countries, factors such as gender or caste even bar access to education. In turn, not having equitable access to education then links back to continuing inequities for those that are disadvantaged, such as poverty cycles.
